LASIK Surgery: Understanding the Basics of Eye LASIK Surgery
This website is intended to answer many of the questions that are repeatedly asked about the subject of eye lasik surgery.
LASIK may be the most commonly performed refractive surgery procedure today. It's well-known in the U.S. and there are many people who think of it as a very effective outpatient procedure.
Since it's widely recognized, a number of eye centers, particularly in the U.S., now offer the lasik surgery procedure for those people who have problems with myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism.
The term LASIK (many people call it LASIX ) stands for Laser Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis. It's a type of refractive surgery that reshapes the cornea of the eye in order to correct myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. And, perhaps one basic thing to note about LASIK is that it is an outpatient procedure performed by a refractive surgeon. Therefore, since it's outpatient, you can have the LASIK surgery procedure done and go home afterwards.
What's involved in the LASIK surgery operation?
Essentially, a medical device known as microkeratome is used in LASIK surgery to create a thin, circular flap in the cornea. The attending surgeon will fold the flap back out of the way, then extract some corneal tissue underneath with the use of an excimer laser.
The excimer laser uses a cool ultraviolet light beam to precisely remove the very tiny bits of tissue from the cornea to reshape it. It’s said that the reshaped corner works better to focus light into the eye and onto the retina if the reshaping is done in the right way. This allows for much clearer vision. The flap is then laid back in place, covering the area where the corneal tissue was removed.
LASIK surgery, although considered very effective for numerous reasons, is just like any other surgery, with its own risks and complications. Just how risky is it then to undergo Eye LASIK surgery? Our next article details the possible complications that could develop along with suggestions on how to avoid them.
